“Chic” attended Newport Elementary School, graduating from Bridgeton High School in 1955, where he excelled academically and in track, basketball, and football as a wide receiver. He enlisted in the US Airforce in 1955 and was a Radio Intercept Operator. His tenure in the US Air Force allowed him to travel to Japan, California and Scotland, where he also played basketball.
